A mechanical pencil keeps the same line width and never needs sharpening – the finer 0.5 mm suits precise writing and technical drawing, while 0.7 mm is sturdier for everyday use. Faber-Castell Grip 1345 takes 0.5 mm leads and Grip 1347 takes 0.7 mm, Grip 2010 comes in both sizes and TK-Fine Vario L is 1.0 mm. Zebra DelGuard 0.5 mm protects the lead from breaking. Some pencils are sold together with spare leads.
